On March 4, 2021 the Eco9 class of E.S Laird had an all day coding challenge! We got the chance of using 4,000 dollars a set worth of equipment and learning how to code different tools. We learned how to use the breadboard and arduino board, how to make LED lights light up, how distance sensors work, how a piezo buzzer (speaker) makes noise, and much more. In our challenge we put all the skills we learned in the past few days together to make either a diagram of an automatic lifting bridge or a train crossing.
In our groups of three we colored, designed and worked together cooperatively so we can get our project finished and working. People in each group made sure that everyone got a chance to do coding, building and wiring. There were some struggles at times but everyone found a way to get through it. This was a great experience and a great opportunity for us, we all had fun experimenting with our projects and getting time to do something different than regular class work. When the day was coming to an end each group got a chance to present their moving diagram to the class and explain how it works. This was a great day for the Eco9 class, and we are looking forward to more challenges in the future. Desirae Messmer

By: Aljhon Apo  As an explorative class, we were very fortunate to be able to visit Lakeland College's Open House located in Vermillion and learn different fields that were showcased there. During the morning, me (Aljhon) and the other students were given "ROWDY" cards that had tasks in them to do and once done, that section would be stamped. They were like BINGO cards, but named "ROWDY". After you have received at least 5 stamps, you were allowed to redeem a free bag with gloves in them. Me and my other friends walked around the campus and checked the different fields that were open. We eventually split up to check different fields that we had interest in. Some of my friends were interested in welding and trades, while other friends of mine were interested in rodeo, cattle, etc. When lunch came by, we ate some food and went on a tour around the campus. The first tour was about firefighters and what they do, practice and work on. I found it very interesting that firefighters have the strength to be able to carry an SBCA kit, hoses and dummies that can go from 50-75 pounds. The next tour that we went on was about the Animal Clinic. There were different labs and rooms for specific areas that they needed to work on such as examining skeletal and organ systems, neutering or spaying pets and a microscope lab to look at bacteria, blood and cells. They showed their student run farm and cattle operations. There were combines, airdrills, an Epoint facility, etc. In the end, I had a lot fun (I'm guessing my friends did as well) learning about different aspects, in all sorts of fields, and information that I hadn't known, and the environment that is at Lakeland College.
Aljhon Apo By: Amy Dobranski My leadership team is the communicators. In the team, my job is to take, sort, and edit photos.
What is photography to me? To me photography is an art of observation and feeling. Taking a photo, freezing a moment, reveals how rich reality really is. Photography is a way of feeling, touching, and loving. The photo you took is captured forever, it remembers the little things, long after you have forgotten everything. I believe photography is full of feeling. As Don McCullin said “If you can't feel what your looking at, how are you going to get others to feel anything when they look at your pictures”. I like that you can take interesting pictures in an ordinary place. There is a difference between what you see and how you see it. Photography also has a lot imagination and creativity to it as well. I personally use my imagination and creativity to picture what the photo could become, how I feel about it. What is it to some others? To a lot of people it can be a form of communication that can be internally understood. Photographers wish to inform, educate, entertain, or share some experiences with others. Photos are their means of expression, you can express so many different things in one photo. They visually represent their feelings, or a story. Why is this relevant to our Eco 9 class? A photo captures life moments, moments of fun, happiness, friendship, etc. We would like those moments to last, to remember them and share with others. When we take photos we record moments, document the event, enhance the memory of an experience and having fun doing those! Amy Dobranski By: Micah Penill Gender equality is still a very serious issue in our society. It has gotten much better over the years, however, it still has a long way to go. I am not ashamed to say that I am quite feminist. I believe that ladies get everything in life harder than men do. Some examples would be, getting labelled based on looks, getting touched inappropriately when it’s not wanted, getting called things such as “slut,”“hoe,”etc. For the things that men get called legends for. It is things like these that cause so many young girls to be unhappy with themselves. With the female side of it there has to be a male side of it as well. As much as I fight for women, I know that there are men in the world that struggle just as much or more with the same things. Stereotypes are often just as difficult for men to live up to as women. There is enormous pressure to be a “real man”, to demonstrate both physical and emotional strength. In the eyes of other males, they are not allowed to feel any love, pain or sadness. “Men are more likely to consume alcohol excessively; more likely to engage in violent and risky behaviours; and less likely to admit pain, seek medical advice or have a strong social network from which to ask for help.” (“VIC.GOV.AU” 2018). It is absolutely ridiculous that men are constantly under pressure to maintain the ‘manly’ image. When everyone needs to have a release, It is much harder for men because they are ashamed of expressing their emotions. I have very strong feelings for both the male and female side of equality. I hate that women get treated the way they do and sometimes feel unhappy with themselves or don’t like who they are. I also hate that men are expected to maintain this image when I know that every single person on this planet needs to have a way to talk about their feelings in some way. In a perfect world everyone would be able to be completely themselves and wouldn’t have to worry about inequality. I’m hoping that by the time my children are my age now, the world will have gotten better at not discriminating. I will raise my kids to know that every person is perfect in their own way and that different is beautiful, just as the way I was raised. I know and understand that you don’t have to change to be a better you. You are already a great you. The world has to change it’s point of view. Micah Penill By: Alexia Rizea  Right now I’m a Caretaker, my job as a caretaker is to feed Sir Stanford Edmond De Mimsy Alfred Wellingthorp The 3rd (don’t ask what happened the first & 2) and I make sure the fish have enough food. I also take care of the hydro room. The hydro room is easy to look after. It’s really calming to water the plants, you can hear the water flowing and the air in there is really clean. As much as I like taking care of the hydro room, I’d have to say that feeding Sir Stanford, the class turtle, is my favourite thing to do. Sir Stanford is only 14, so I’d say he is a teenager as much as we are. Whoever says turtles are boring has never spent a day with Sir Stanford. He is a little bit grumpy most of the time, and honestly, he behaves like a cat. He likes attention, but he will act as if he doesn’t care about you. He likes to jump into the water and make a lot of noise when the class is quiet. He will follow your finger around the tank but don’t tell him I told you, we wouldn't want to ruin his reputation as a tough guy. He likes his turtle food, and he gets a little too excited when you feed him, so excited that it takes a bit for him to realize that the food is upstairs and not in the water. Because turtles don’t produce saliva, he has to jump in the water to make the food soft. He likes to stare at us when we eat in the sitting area and have lunch with us. He is a fun friend to look at when you get bored. Even though he is a bit of work, he brings more life to our classroom. People say that turtles are dull but I have never seen an animal with more personality than Sir Stanford.
